Case of probable structural resonance
During a mechanical run test of an axially split centrifugal compressor, polar plots from the rotor’s Y-direction probe showed an unusual pattern for a healthy machine at steady state running condition.
Who would have thought that the Winsurance field could provide insight into the operations and maintenance of turbomachinery? Yet that is exactly what occurred at the 39th annual Combustion Turbine Operations Technical Forum (CTOTF) Spring 2014 meeting in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida.
To prevent a unit shutdown on low oil pressure, continuously vent the non-operating cooler and filter by installing orificed return lines, and keep the transfer valve bypass fill line opened to ensure warm-up of the cooler and filter prior to transfer, in cold climates. In cold climates (ambient temperatures below 15oC at any time of the year), cool, static oil in the non-operating cooler and filter will cause a transient pressure drop when it is charged on-line.
The monitoring of the operation and record keeping is of utmost importance to the effectiveness of any flushing operation. A dedicated log book for each flushed console should be maintained, and all entries should detail the condition of flushing screens and mode of o
One of the most important pre-start-up operations for an auxiliary system is flushing. The object of flushing is to render the entire auxiliary system free of excessive particles that could enter into critical equipment components, thus causing significant equipment damage.
The OEM line-up for the coming years of long-term growth is clear. The round of consolidation among the big players seems to be over as the power generation industry is coming out of a cyclical downturn and looking ahead to load growth and orders.
Experience shows that pump MTBFs (mean time between failures) are directly related to mechanical seal reliability. It is well known that pump mechanical seal MTBF is the lowest of all machinery components.
Below are excerpts from the paper ‘Performance Improvement of Gas Turbine With Compressed Air Injection For Low Density Operational Conditions’ (by S. Arias Quintero, S. Auerbach, R. Kraft of PowerPHASE LLC) presented at the 2014 ASME Turbo Expo.
The entrance of oil through the oil seals into refrigeration systems will reduce the capacity of the system and impact on process unit revenue. To ensure that seal oil does not enter the process loop and foul the chillers, it is essential that lube/seal oil reservoir level on all refrigeration applications are monitored.
Careful monitoring of oil reservoir level will signal oil seal system problems and lead to their resolution before the refrigeration system, plant capacity and revenue are affected.
Sweet hydrocarbon or inert gas service
It seems a foregone conclusion that we’re going to go with the “natural gas is a bridge fuel” logic, because it fits the current political narrative. I’d like to put this into perspective.
This approach puts us on the “Coal-to-gas shift” initiative, underlined in red, below:
Following an interesting corporate battle involving business interests, energy security and national interest, GE was finally able to persuade the French government to incline in its favor. But the government has made some more demands from GE, and the final shape of things is yet to come.
Kawasaki Heavy Industries, Ltd. (KHI) recently announced the completion of its new 30MW gas turbine Kawasaki L30A, said to be the flagship model of its fleet. Claimed to have one of the highest efficiency ratings in the world in its class, it is expected to be launched in June 2012.
MAN Diesel & Turbo has broken the century mark with its latest order for integrally geared centrifugal compressor, for air separation. It is a key component in air separation trains and the company’s AIRTRAIN and AIRMAX trains cover a broad spectrum.
The new EPA guidelines for power plants has probably come at the right time for big companies such as GE and Siemens that seem to have bet on an immediate surge in gas turbine orders through their strong efforts to buy other gas turbine businesses and round out their power range portfolios.
Usually contractors and users include performance test in the base scope of the purchased compressor. However during bid conditioning, the Engineers tend to give less attention to the evaluated bidders’ shop test capabilities.
Alstom has until June 23 to decide on the GE offer for takeover. But it seems that either the French government or the EU anti-trust commission would be able to beat back the GE push despite the Alstom board being favourable to the GE offer.
Alstom has said that it would open its books to Siemens just as much as it did to GE, not more. But the Siemens offer would likely exclude the train division that would function as an independent French entity.
Interference Diagrams” also termed by some as “Safe Diagrams" are utilized for fully-coupled rotating blades. In Reference No. 1 resonance where harmonic of speed is equal to nodal diameters is reviewed, along with when difference in numbers of blades and vanes equal to number of diameters.
