GE signs service agreement with Emirates Global Aluminium

GE Power & Water has signed a long-term contractual services agreement (CSA) with aluminum producer Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA) to service and operate on turbines at the Taweelah aluminum smelter complex in Abu Dhabi. The Taweelah smelter is said to be the largest single-site smelter complex in Abu Dhabi, which has GE’s 9FA turbines installed for an aluminum project, said GE officials.

GE has agreed to extend the current contractual service agreement for three of its 9FA gas turbines, as well as add the maintenance and support for two 9FA standby units. The agreement would also cover requirements of spare parts, repairs and field services. In addition, GE’s emission control technologies will also ensure the plant reduces its carbon footprint and meets regulatory requirements set by the Abu Dhabi Environmental Agency.

According to the EGA, its core operating assets are Dubai Aluminium (DUBAL) and Emirates Aluminium (EMAL) – whose combined annual production is 2.4m tonnes per annum (tpa), making EGA the fifth largest aluminum producer in the world.

Abdulla Kalban, managing director of EGA said EGA is moving to the next level of growth “as a top global aluminum producer with a strong commitment to the highest measures of operational efficiency and health, environment and safety standards.” As a long-term partner of EMAL and DUBAL, GE has been supporting the organizations with advanced power generation equipment and efficient service support, he said. “The new CSA will further enable the Taweelah smelter to function seamlessly through proactive maintenance and assured reliability.”
