Ansaldo Energia, FATA win $581 m contract for gas-fired plants in South Africa

A consortium led by GDF Suez has awarded Ansaldo Energia and FATA a turnkey construction contract for two open cycle gas-fired power plants in South Africa. The contract, valued at $581 m (EUR 440 m), comprises the development of the 670 MW Avon plant to power the Durban area and the 335 MW Dedisa plant serving the Port Elizabeth area.

Ansaldo will supply six AE94.2 gas turbines, four to be delivered to the Avon project and two to the Dedisa plant. The company will also supply the civil works for both sites, in addition to transport, erection and commissions work for its share of the supply, worth a total of $370 m (EUR 280 m).

FATA will supply mechanical and electric plant worth a total of $211 m (EUR 160 m) in the framework of the total order, working through the EPC Power division and South African Branch Company. The contract also includes construction of a substation and the interface with the electric grid, fuel storage and distribution, and water treatment.
