Dominion Virginia Power recently received approval from the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) for its $1.3bn combined cycle power station in Greensville County. The 1,588MW natural gas-fired power station is being built to serve the growing demand for energy, and meet air quality and proposed carbon dioxide emissions standards.
Construction is scheduled to begin later this year, and the power plant is expected to go online in 2019. The project is coming up a few miles away from Dominion's Brunswick Power Station, which is expected to be fully operational next month.
The station is likely to have low-carbon intensity as it uses clean-burning natural gas, combined cycle technology, and control technology to reduce emissions. It will also use less water, and the impact to rivers and streams will be less.
Development and construction of the project is also likely to contribute close to $474m to the Commonwealth.
