The Netherlands-based plant uses SLB Capturi’s Just Catch modular system, which reduces onsite installation and outfitting work for lower costs and ease-of-deployment.

SLB Capturi, a joint venture between SLB and Aker Carbon Capture, commissioned its modular carbon-capture plant in Hengelo, Netherlands. The plant will capture up to 100,000 metric tons of CO2 annually from Twence’s waste-to-energy facility—Twence obtained plant control following its commissioning. The captured CO2 will be applied in the horticulture, food, and beverage markets.

“We are proud of our collaboration with Twence to bring online the first modular carbon-capture plant at a waste-to-energy facility,” said Egil Fagerland, Chief Executive Officer, SLB Capturi. “As pressure mounts for industries to reduce emissions and meet net-zero targets, access to affordable, effective carbon-capture technologies is more important than ever. We look forward to continuing our mission to enable access to the capture technologies needed to achieve CO2 emissions reduction impact at scale.”

The plant is equipped with SLB Capturi’s modular Just Catch modular system, minimizing onsite installation and outfitting activities. This design promotes cost efficiency and ease-of-deployment, especially when compared with other carbon-capture alternatives.

"We are excited to see the successful completion of our new carbon-capture plant," said Marc Kapteijn, Chief Executive Officer, Twence. "This sustainable project was safely realized by a motivated, committed team and through collaboration with SLB Capturi. In the spring, we will supply the first COto the greenhouse horticulture sector. We are convinced that this technology plays a role in our ongoing efforts to reduce carbon emissions and realize our sustainability ambitions.”

In early December 2024, SLB Capturi successfully constructed a carbon-capture plant at Heidelberg Materials’ cement facility in Brevik, Norway, and is now ready for testing and commissioning. The industrial-scale plant includes:

  • Carbon-capture system
  • Compression system
  • Heat integration system
  • Intermediate storage
  • Loadout facilities

The plant may capture up to 400,000 metric tons of CO2 per year and, when operational, will enable the production of net-zero cement with maintained strength and quality. Aker Solutions and other local industries assisted SLB with project execution, specifically in the construction works. The Brevik carbon capture and storage (CCS) plant is part of Longship CCS—a complete value chain for the capture, transport, and storage of industrial CO2 emissions. The Brevik plant moves into commissioning phase with operations beginning in 2025.

In June 2024, Aker Carbon Capture (ACC) and SLB closed a previously announced joint venture to combine technology portfolios, expertise, and operations platforms to support increased carbon-capture adoption for large-scale industrial decarbonization. The new company is headquartered in Oslo, Norway—SLB owns an 80% stake in the company while ACC ASA owns the remaining 20% stake.

The merged company includes ACC’s amine-based Advanced Carbon Capture portfolio, such as Just Catch and Big Catch modular plant technologies for medium- and large-scale facilities and Just Catch Offshore for offshore gas turbines. SLB contributes a portfolio of technology solutions, including non-aqueous solvent and emerging sorbent-based offerings. The company has seven technology installations underway with a total capacity to capture up to 1 million tons of CO2 emissions per year.
