Mitsubishi Power to Deliver M501 JAC for Steam, Electricity Cogeneration Project

The JAC gas turbine is hydrogen-ready with more than 64% efficiency rate, providing the plant with flexibility, faster start-up times, and load-following capabilities.

Samsung C&T Corp. Saudi Arabia ordered Mitsubishi Power’s M501 JAC combined-cycle hydrogen-ready gas turbine for an industrial steam and electricity cogeneration plant project—the project consortium is led by Abu Dhabi National Energy Co. (TAQA) and JERA. The planned facility will generate electricity and steam for a petrochemical complex in Jubail, Saudi Arabia.

"TAQA and its partners are pleased to partner with Mitsubishi Power to harness the efficiencies and benefits of its J-class gas turbine technology to drive operation and sustainability in our new plant,” said Dr. Frank Possmeier, Chief Business Development Officer, TAQA's Generation Business. “Developing the most efficient and reliable utility projects is a priority for TAQA, as we look to offer generation plants for our partners and build on our existing track record.”

Mitsubishi Power also signed a long-term service agreement with the consortium for parts, repairs, and services, ensuring equipment reliability and sustainability. The agreement is supported by Mitsubishi Power’s service center located close to the plant site, which enables localized support and fast response times.

The 475-MW cogeneration power plant, owned by TAQA (51%) and JERA (49%), will power the Saudi Aramco Total Refining and Petrochemical Co. (SATORP) strategic expansion—a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies. The SATORP petrochemical complex will contain a large mixed-load steam cracker.

"JERA is excited to partner with Mitsubishi Power for the SATORP Strategic Expansion,” said Izumi Kai, Managing Executive Officer, Head of the Platform Business Division at JERA. “This new cogeneration plant, based on advanced J-class gas turbine technology, is designed to optimize energy efficiency and reduce environmental impact. By leveraging this technology, we believe that the plant will ensure reliable and efficient power and steam generation, setting standards in operational performance and sustainability."

M501 JAC gas turbines maintain efficiency over 64% and can blend hydrogen with natural gas, providing the SATORP power plant with flexibility, faster start-up times, and load-following capabilities to balance electricity supply and demand. The gas turbine-equipped plant will ensure a low-carbon power supply and support Saudi Arabia’s industrial growth and decarbonization goals.

Mitsubishi Power Turbine News

In early August 2024, Sinohydro Corp. contracted Mitsubishi Power to deliver an M701F gas turbine and steam turbine for a 500 MW gas turbine combined-cycle (GTCC) power plant in Sarawak, Malaysia. The M701F gas turbine will co-fire up to 30% hydrogen fuel. Sinohydro is the engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning contractor for the project.

In addition to supplying power generation equipment, the company secured a long-term service agreement with PETROS—the GTCC plant developer—to ensure stable power plant performance following its commercial operation. Mitsubishi Generator Co., formed in April 2024, will manufacture generators for the GTCC plant.

Mitsubishi Power will also provide auxiliary equipment and technical advisors to support equipment installation and commissioning. Upon completion, the plant will provide energy security and capacity for Northern Sarawak’s future power demand.
