Northern Endurance Partnership Grants TechnipFMC EPCI Approval for Carbon-Capture, Storage Project

TechnipFMC will deliver and install an all-electric subsea system comprised of trees, manifolds, umbilicals, and infield flowlines to allow CO2 transport over long distances.

TechnipFMC received the green light on a contract for Northern Endurance Partnership’s (NEP) all-electric integrated carbon capture and storage project. The contract includes the delivery and installation of an all-electric subsea system, including trees, manifolds, umbilicals, and infield flowlines, which allows CO2 to be transported over long distances. TechnipFMC will deliver the subsea system using its integrated engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (iEPCI) execution model.

“We are excited to see this development move forward, as it is a significant milestone for the United Kingdom and our company,” said Luana Duffé, Executive Vice President, New Energy at TechnipFMC. “TechnipFMC will leverage its subsea expertise and proprietary technologies to deliver the first all-electric iEPCI for carbon transportation and storage.”

NEP is a joint venture between bp, Equinor, and TotalEnergies, and this full notice to proceed follows the contract’s financial close and entrance into the execution phase for the U.K.’s East Coast Cluster CO2 transportation and storage infrastructure. TechnipFMC’s EPCI contract is valued between $500 million and $1 billion.

Technip at NZT Power

This week, Net-Zero Teesside Power reached financial close and issued a full notice to the GE Vernova/Technip Energies (T.EN)/Balfour Beatty consortium. The U.K. project is to be, according to the consortium, the world’s first gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage, capturing up to 2 million tons of CO2 per year. The captured carbon will be transported and permanently stored by the Northern Endurance Partnership. Once the plant is up and running, it could produce up to 742 MW of flexible low-carbon power.

Technip Energies, with the support of technology partner Shell Catalysts & Technologies, is leading the integration of a carbon-capture plant using its Canopy by T.EN solution, powered by Shell’s CANSOLV CO2 capture system. The EGR system that will be used enables the operator to boost the efficiency and performance of carbon capture.

Galp Refinery

In late 2023, Technip Energies received engineering, procurement services, and construction management (EPsCm) contracts from Galp to produce a biofuels unit and a green hydrogen unit for the Portuguese Sines refinery. The biofuels unit will have a capacity of 270 ktpa, producing renewable diesel and sustainable aviation fuel from biomass feedstock. It is comprised of a joint venture between Galp (75%) and Mitsui (25%), as Technip Energies collaborates with Technoedif Engenharia for the completion of the EPsCm project. A biomass-to-fuel plant will offset approximately 800 ktpa of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions for Galp.

The green hydrogen unit, a 100-MW electrolysis plant, will produce up to 15 ktpa of renewable hydrogen through Plug Power’s proton membrane exchange electrolyzers. Hydrogen production via electrolysis will replace approximately 20% of the current grey hydrogen usage at the Sines refinery, as well as reduce GHG emissions to the tune of 110 ktpa. The biofuels and green hydrogen units total an approximate investment of £650 million.
