Siemens Energy supplying 260 MW CCPP in Cyprus

Siemens Energy will supply three SGT-800 gas turbines to the 260 MW Cyfield Mari combined-cycle power plant in the Republic of Cyprus. The turbines will operate in a 3x1 combined-cycle configuration. Cyfield Construction Ltd. and Siemens Energy agreed to the deal.

The plant expects higher efficiency levels in its range and carbon dioxide emissions 50% lower than the average current emissions of electricity production in Cyprus, which has historically relied on fuel oil for power generation.

Siemens Energy will supply three SGT-800 gas turbines, three SGen5-100A generators and a 20-year long-term service and maintenance agreement. The plant anticipates a start to commercial operations by 2023 and is projected to be in line with the arrival of liquified natural gas (LNG) on the island.

Cyprus’ new LNG terminal is currently under construction. Until now the island grid of Cyprus is almost completely served by heavy fuel oil fired boilers. As the space for wind and solar power is limited on the island, the company sees a switch to natural gas as key to minimizing sulphur oxide emissions and particle emissions. Cyprus hopes the new plant will lead to a significant reduction in the cost of electricity and will supply as much as one third of Cyprus’s electricity needs.
